  Dr. Varelas received his medical education at the University of Athens, after which he became an officer in the Greek Air Force, before completing a research fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, a residency in Neurology at Yale and a Neurocritical Care Fellowship at Johns Hopkins.  He previously served at Wayne State University College of Medicine as professor, and as the founder and Director of the Neurocritical Care Unit at Henry Ford Hospital.  He is  an international authority on brain death

Egyptian Critical care Summit 2022Attended by more than 400 participants , the Summit which took place at Cairo, Egypt from 29 till 31 March, 2022 witnessed lectures covering a wide array of critical care medicine topics.

The Summit hosted Dr Sandra Kane Gill President SCCM who delivered Dr Max Weil Memorial lecture and also contributed in the Clinical Pharmacy Symposium which was organized along the summit.

Several virtual faculty contributed in the scientific program including Drs; P. Verlas, Lluis Blanch, Paolo Pelosi, Alain Combes, Tamer Abdel Hak, R Ferrer, Manuel Quintana, Peter Papadakos and Federico Pappalardo

The Egyptian Critical Care Summit 2022 was organized in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Critical care Center, Cairo University which was inaugurated in March 1982 by its founder Professor Sherif Mokhtar, Professor of Cardiology and Critical care Medicine and President of the Egyptian College of Critical care Physicians (ECCCP) . The Summit was presided by Professor Alia Abdel Fattah , Professor of Critical care Medicine and chairman of the Egyptian ECMO Working Group.

Dr-Sandra-Gill-Critical-care-Egypt-conference.The Egyptian College of Critical Care Physicians ( ECCCP) is proud to have Dr Sandra Kane Gill , President Elect of Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)  as the Egyptian Critical Care Summit featured guest speaker.

Sandra L. Kane-Gill, PharmD, MSc, FCCP, FCCM, is a tenured professor of pharmacy and therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. She has secondary appointments in the School of Medicine, Clinical Translational Science Institute, Department of Critical Care Medicine, and Department of Biomedical Informatics. In addition to her academic appointments, Dr. Kane-Gill is a critical care medication safety pharmacist in the 

Her research focuses on effective approaches for the detection, prevention, and management of medication errors and adverse drug events with emphasis on drug associated acute kidney injury. She has successfully incorporated health information technology (clinical decision support, telemedicine) into practice to advance healthcare systems, leading to safer and higher-quality patient care. She also applies implementation science strategies to ensure adoption of medication safety practices.

Dr. Kane-Gill is the principal investigator for federally funded research from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). She has been invited to present her work  at numerous professional meetings and she has published over 250 articles and book chapters related to critical care and patient safety. Dr. Kane-Gill is recognized in the top 1% of scholars in the world writing about medication errors and was acknowledged on World Patient Safety Day 2021. She has received several prestigious awards for her accomplishments such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Literature Award for Sustained Contributions, ASHP Residency Preceptor Excellence Award, and Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Excellence in Innovation Award. Dr. Kane-Gill’s international expertise has resulted in invited participation at consensus conferences such as Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) and Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI). She is a fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

We have received an invitation from the Instructors of Airway Matters course conducted by UCL , UK to our members to join Airway Matters, a free, flexible, newly updated online course on safe airway management, starting on 31 January 2022. 

Complications in airway management can result in devastating outcomes.  How can we improve safety, prevent complications, and be prepared to manage difficulties when they arise? How, in a crisis, can we ensure that human and technical resources are best utilised?  In the context of COVID-19, how can we safely manage our patients whilst protecting ourselves and our colleagues?  Airway Matters explores answers to these questions.

The content of this supplementary weeks includes:

  • Standards, guidelines and clinical governance
  • Drugs and equipment for RSI
  • Risk mitigation and patient management in preparation for advanced airway management
  • Decision-making around pre-hospital anesthesia and intubation
  • Video-laryngoscopy and in-cabin intubation
  • Pre-hospital difficult or failed airway management, intra-arrest airway management and pre-oxygenation techniques

The Egyptian Italian Symposium on Critical Care Medicine presided by Professor Sherif Mokhtar, President of ECCCP took place on 16 December, 2021 at the Grand Nile Tower Hotel ( Hyatt) , Cairo, Egypt.

The symposium hosted ECCCP board of directors as well as several eminent clinicians from the critical care and pulmonary medicine specialties who reviewed and discussed the presentations provided by the Italian guest faculty .

The symposium included the participation of Egyptian ECMO Working Group and Pulmonary Critical care Medicine Working Group.
